Bailey, 77, a retired farmer and lifelong resident of Surry County, died Thursday at a Suffolk hospital. He is survived by three sons. Cordie V., Roger J. and Jack Bailey, of Wakefield; eight daughters, Mrs. O.P. Higgins, Jr., and Mrs. Herbert Drewry, of Waverly; Mrs. Bernard Barrett, of Wakefield; Mrs. Herman Roach, of Homeville, Sussex County; Mrs. Lewis Reynolds, of Richmond; Mrs. Henry Spratley, of Surry; Mrs. Raymond Rountree, of Smithfield and Mrs. Garland Harvell, of Bellevue, Neb., and 22 grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the residence, with burial in Rocky Hock Methodist Church cemetery. ****************************************************************************** CHARLES RUFUS BAILEY CHARLES BAILEY DIED TODAY AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS Funeral services for Mr. Charles R. Bailey, age 77, who died at a Suffolk Hospital, Thursday morning, after a brief illness, will be held on Friday, September 3 at 2:30 in the home. Burial will be in the Rocky Hock Cemetery. These services will be conducted by the Rev. L.P. Bland. Mr. Bailey was a well-known, retired farmer of the Surry area. He was the husband of the late Annie H. Bailey, who preceded him in death five months ago. Mr. Bailey is survived by three sons, Cordie V. Bailey, Roger J. Bailey, and Jack Bailey, all of the Wakefield community. He is also survived by eight daughters; Mrs. Herbert Drewry and Mrs. O.P. Higgins, Jr., both of Waverly; Mrs. Bernard Barrett, of Wakefield; Mrs. Herman Roach of Homeville; Mrs. Lewis Reynolds, of Richmond; Mrs. Henry Spratley, of Surry; Mrs. Raymond Rountree of Smithfield and Mrs. Garland Harvell, of Bellevue, Nebraska. There are 22 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers will be John, Leslie, and Garland Goodrich, Paul Rogers, Charlie Murphy, Bernard Bailey, Benjamin, Herman, Burrell and Enos Hargrave. ****************************************************************************** IN HONOR OF: IN MEMORY OF CHARLIE AND ANNIE HARGRAVE BAILEY NAMED ON THE SECOND STAIN GLASS WINDOW OF ROCKY HOCK CHURCH Charlie Bailey was born at the Mill House located next to the gristmill at the Mill Bridge in the Rocky Hock Community. In his youth he moved to a house at the site where Viola Lowe now lives. This house was later moved to Williamsburg and restored. He married Ann Hargrave, moved to Oak Shade Farm, home of Paul Rogers, Jr. today, and began his lifelong farming career. He inherited the farmland from his father Joseph Bailey. He and Annie had 16 children, which included three sets of twins, lived to adulthood. The other five died in their youth. The eleven surviving children were Wilber "Jack" and Wilma (twins), Edith and Ethel (twins), Roger J. ("R.J."), Buck, Amy, Inez, Dorothy, Gladys, and Annie Leigh. All of the girls except Amy attended and graduated college at what is today's Longwood University. Annie Hargrave Bailey was the great-granddaughter of Dr. Matthew Harris, who is recognized as growing the first commercial peanuts in the U.S. They were married for over fifty years. Both were born in 1876 and both died in 1954, the year Rocky Hock Church was remodeled. They are buried in Rocky Hock Cemetery, and are the grandparents of Charles Bailey and Camille Bailey Donaldson. Thanks to Charles for the photography and to Camille for much of this information.
