All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ SMITHFIELD - Nick Bell, age 78, of Battery Park Road, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Louise Obici Hospital in Suffolk, Va. A native of Surry County and a resident of Smithfield, he retired from Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company after 33 years of service. He was a lifelong member of Moore's Swamp Baptist Church and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Bell; parents, William Perry and Lottie Bell; and sister, Laura Carroll. Survivors include three daughters, Jane Gale and husband, John, of Charleston, W.Va., Diane Jones and husband, Jimmy, of Smithfield and Lynn Bell of Hampton; son, Perry Bell and wife, Luetta, of Hampton; three sisters, Helen Minton of Smithfield, Hattie Vaughan of Petersburg and Mary Bell of Surry; two brothers, Henry Bell of Ivor and Charles Bell of Surry; seven grandchildren, Courtney Gale, Stephanie Gale, Adam Gale, Larry Jones, Melissa Jones, Kaitlin Bell and John Taliaferro; and two great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, in St. Luke's Memorial Park with Dr. Don Rhoton officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, VA 23431. Colonial Funeral Home of Smithfield is handling arrangements.
