All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ NORFLEET* BAILEY The first name that jumps out at me is Norfleet Bailey. According to A.W. Bohannan (Old Surry, Page 62), he was the "first soldier from Surry to die in the service during the (First) World War." According to his grave marker, he was a Private in Company A, 315th Infantry Regiment. The 315th Regiment was part of the 79th Division. Because Norfleet Bailey died in December 1917 and his unit didn't deploy to France until July of the following year, I assume his death was either due to natural causes or a training accident. I'll keep researching some of the other names as time permits. Pvt. Norfleet BAILEY, U.S. Army, b. 6 Feb 1895, Surry Co., d. 16 Dec 1917, Camp Lee, Prince George Co., interred in Rocky Hock Methodist Church Cemetery (Plot 58**), Surry Co., 6 May 1971, Rocky Hock Church memorial **Rocky Hock list, an extension of the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/surry/cemeteries/rockyhk.txt *Additional information: D.Cert. 30437 (Rives #43) states he died of Brocho-pneumonia (bi-lateral), with Measles as as contributary cause. A photo of his gravestone is posted with Find a Grave Memorial #137189632; it shows "Norflet." This memorial also originally read "Norflet." His parents, Henry B. & "Sallie" Sarah Elizabeth (DRAKE) BAILEY, are buried in the same lot. His mother's obit ("Richmond Times-Dispatch," Dec. 11, 1952, p. 10) is posted at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/surry/obits/b400s8ob.txt Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by Mrs. Bruce Saunders (bs4403@verizon.net), and re-formatted by File Manager Matt Harris. file at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/surry/obits/b400n4ob.txt
