A lifelong resident of Surry County, Mr. Bell in 1888 became associated with the general merchandise firm of Warren & Ferguson, which later became Warren & Bell and more recently Bell & Rowell Inc. He was postmaster at Bacons Castle for 50 years until his retirement from the position in 1942. He was a member of the county electorial board and a former member of the Ruritan Club and of the OPA rationing board for Surry County. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Marable Bell; one son, William W. Bell; three daughters, Mrs. Joseph W. Rowell; Mrs. Joseph C. Christopher and Mrs. Maxwell C. Woodard; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. J. Dudley Seward and one brother, Finley J. Bell. The funeral services were held at the family home at Bacons Castle at 2 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. T.W. Page and the Rev. J.F. Colston. Burial was in Old Brick Cemetery.
