BARFIELD SR. [picture] A funeral service for Percy Thomas Barfield Sr., retired Battalion Chief, of the Petersburg Fire Dept., who died Saturday at his home, 2322 Bishop St., will be held tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son with the Rev. H. Edward Henderson, pastor of Second Baptist Church officiating. The following will be pallbearers: active - retired Chief J.N. Farmer, retired Assistant Chief J.R. Goodrich Sr., Engineer T.R. Garrett, Chief W.H. Siegle, Capt. H.L. Beasley, Fireman J.S. Grotz, J.P. Westfall, and Assistant Chief J.R. Chappell; honorary - members of Petersburg Fire department and members of the Southside Emergency Drew. Burial will be in Blandford Cemetery. Retired Chief Farmer said today that the department has lost a "distinguished leader". He pointed to Chief Barfield’s dedication to the cause of greater fire safety in the city and that since his retirement he had been active in organizing volunteer fire departments in the area. Chief Barfield was one of the most outstanding instructors in use of gasmasks and gas problems in the Petersburg department. He was active in Civil Defense affairs during World War II. He was an instructor in organizing volunteers for fire service and instructed classes in war gases. This, he did on his own time. Chief Barfield Sr., began his career as a fire fighter with his appointment to the City Fire Department on July 6, 1930, was appointed to lieutenant Oct. 26, 1944, and to Captain on Jan.1, 1949. He was made a battalion chief on May 15, 1958. He was appointed head of the Fire Prevention Bureau and did an outstanding job. "I know of no man that was more dedicated to the fire service. Chief Barfield was known to the men as 'Bear'. The reason was due to his strength and will power to carry on when things looked the darkest. The loss through death of Percy T. Barfield Sr., is a blow to the fire service of the community for leaders of his caliber are not found with any great frequency. However, the fire service is richer because of him and his untiring efforts to better both fire protection and prevention. His example of sincere integrity in all matters will certainly stimulate others and emulate in them to carry on his efforts," Chief Farmer said.
