He was a native of Surry County and a retired farmer. Burgess was a member of Elberon Congregational Christian Church and Surry Ruritan Club. Survivors include one daughter, Helen D. Morris of Dendron; two sons, Oliver Taylor Burgess of Norfolk and Herman T. Burgess of Petersburg; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Purviance Funeral Home Chapel by Drs. Marshall O. Bonds and R.E. Brittle. Burial will follow in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
