BRITTLE BY ANNIE G. BRITTLE Alfred Jasper Brittle (1893-1947) was born in Southampton County. In 1920 he married Dolly Ann Goodrich (1887-1973) and moved to Little Surry where he spent the rest of his life. Alfred farmed, ran a saw mill and, on many Saturday afternoon, went to Wakefield to help Lee Murphy cut hair at his shop. After a few years of marriage, he built a home for his wife and family using timber from his farm that he cut at his sawmill. Today, this is the home of his grandson, Sonny Boykin, and his wife, Pam. Alfred loved to fox hunt and had a special horse he rode while fox hunting. The fox horn that he used to call his dogs today hangs on the office wall of his grandson, Sonny. Alfred died at his home from cancer and diabetes, and is buried in Rocky Hock Cemetery. Annie was the sixth of ten children born to Benjamin Hawkins Goodrich and Ansebelia Bailey Goodrich (refer to stained glass window series) Annie and Alfred were both members of Rocky Hock Church, and Annie was active in the Ladies Aid Society. Annie enjoyed the men's choir of Rocky Hock Church, coming to their home to practice. Alfred and Annie had two children - a son who died at birth and a daughter, Helen, who married Charles Boykin. Helen and Charles moved in with her parents to help with the farming and to help care for Alfred during his illness. After Alfred's death, Annie continued to live in the home and helped to rear her six grandchildren until her death in 1973. She is buried next to her husband in Rocky Hock Cemetery. Thanks to the Boykin family - Jean, Glenice, Gayle, Joanne, Cheryl and Sonny - for the photograph and information.
