Mr. Burton was also previously employed by Long Equipment Co. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a past president of the Wakefield Junior Chamber of Commerce and a member of Dendron United Methodist Church. Mr. Burton was a native of Surry County. Survived by his wife, Mary Sheffield Burton of Waverly; two daughters, Sheila B. Ellis of Wakefield and Wendy K. Clements of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; a son, James H. Burton, Jr. of El Paso, Texas; his mother, Minnie Hill Burton of Hampton; four sisters, Norma B. Crocker of Smithfield, Judith Flowers of Hampton, Belle Galdos of Yorktown and Alice Morgan of Dallas, Texas; two brothers, Richard L. Burton of Chesapeake and Martin Burton of Smithfield; and three grandchildren. Visitation from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Purviance Funeral Home. Graveside service at 11 a.m. Thursday in Wakefield Cemetery by the Rev. Herschel Hill.
