BURTON, LONGTIME TEACHER, DIES WAKEFIELD - Miss Josephine Blanche Burton, who spent 56 years teaching first and second-graders in public and private schools, died yesterday at the Hermitage Methodist Home in Richmond. She was 92. Miss Burton, a Wakefield native, graduated in 1916 from Harrison Norman School, James Madison University. She taught first and second grade for her entire career. She taught from 1916 to 1918 in Tazewell County public schools before returning to Wakefield and teaching in Sussex County schools until 1921. She taught in Surry County from 1921 o 1923 and in Norfolk in 1923 and 1924. From 1924 to 1940, Miss Burton taught in Surry public schools. She returned to Sussex in 1940 and taught there until 1965. From 1966 to 1973, she taught at Tidewater Academy, a private school. Miss Burton was an honorary life member of the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teacher. A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Wakefield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wakefield United Methodist Church Building Fund, Wakefield, VA. 23888. ****************************************************************************** JOSEPHINE BLANCHE BURTON Miss Josephine Blanche Burton, 92, of Wakefield, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1986, at the Hermitage Methodist Home in Richmond. Miss Burton, a Wakefield native, was the daughter of the late Charles Alva and Lucy Churchill Burton. She graduated in 1916 from Harrison Normal School, now James Madison University. She taught first and second grade for her entire career, which spanned 56 years. She taught from 1916 to 1918 in Tazewell County public schools before returning to Wakefield and teaching in Sussex County schools until 1921. She taught in Surry County from 1921 to 1923 and in Norfolk in 1923 and 1924. From 1924 to 1940, Miss Burton taught in Surry public schools. She returned to Sussex in 1940 and taught there until 1965. She taught at Tidewater Academy, Wakefield, from 1966 to 1973. Miss Josie, as she was affectionately known to through the years to her pupils, was an honorary life member of the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers. She was a member of Wakefield United Methodist Church. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Baxter Pierce of Waynesboro; and two nieces, Miss Lucy Churchill of Richmond and Mrs. Boyd Moneymaker of Stuarts Draft. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Miss Janet Otis Burton and Mrs. Richard A. Plummer. A graveside funeral service was held Friday, Sept. 19, at Wakefield Cemetery.
