All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ BESSIE ATKINSON BROWN WAKEFIELD - Mrs. Bessie Atkinson Brown, 62, widow of William Henry Brown, Sr., died Sunday, April 19, at a Suffolk hospital after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late John H. and Nellie Grant Atkinson and was a native of Surry County. She had resided in Wakefield nearly all her life. She was a member of the Rocky Hock Methodist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. J.A. Skinner and Mrs. Walter R. Layne, both of Wakefield, and Mrs. Nellie B. Worley of Petersburg; two sons, William H. Brown of Wakefield and Elton W. Brown of Toano; nine grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. J.A. Fore of Petersburg, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Purviance Funeral Chapel by the Rev. L.P. Bland, the Rev. J.L. Blankenship, the Rev. D.M. Cotter and Dr. J.E. White. Burial was in the Rocky Hock Church cemetery. Active pallbearers were F.E. Branch, C.C. Murphy, J.N. Barker, R.M. Pond, Thornton Spivey, Dr. Kasper Kaufman, Samuel Brittle and Marsden Pulley. Her father & step-mother are buried in Blandford Cemetery, Peterburg. Her mother d. 9 Mar 1916 at home, Peterburg, and was buried the next day in Wakefield. Apparently unmarked, she has been added both to Rocky Hock Church Cemetery & Wakefield Cemetery, though she could be elsewhere. GRANT, was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Battery B, 12th VA Light Artillery, CSA.
