All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ EDITH GRUBBS BARNES SPRING GROVE, VA. - Edith Grubbs Barnes, 90, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Va. Married 58 years, she was the widow of O. Ervin Barnes. A native of Surry County, she was born and raised in Dendron, Va., and was the daughter of the late Harry Grubbs Sr., and Florence Scarborough Grubbs Seeley. Upon graduating from Dendron High School, Edith was employed at J.H. Rogers Store in Spring Grove and later at the Circle Store in Claremont, Va. She wrote regularly for the social column in the Sussex-Surry Dispatch. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who loved family gatherings. Edith and her husband loved to dance and enjoyed boating and fishing trips. She enjoyed music, was active in the Music of her church, and was the Choir director of Claremont Baptist Church for many years. Edith was the oldest charter member of Claremont Baptist Church. She was an active member of the Spring Grove community Club for 72 years, joining in 1936. She held memberships in Laurel Chapter #114 Order of the Eastern Star in Claremont, Adah Chapter #7 Order of the Eastern Star in Hopewell and, at present, Alpha Chapter #1 Order of the Eastern Star in Petersburg. She was a former member of the Claremont Home Demonstration Club, the Surry County American Red Cross, and other charitable organizations. She is survived by a daughter, Brenda B. Stephenson of Riverview on the Appomattox Nursing Home in Hopewell; a son, David E. Barnes and wife, Monique of Spring Grove; three grandson, G. Douglas Rollings, Jr., of Spring Grove, Paul D. Harte and wife, Amy, of Surry, Va., and Daniel E. Barnes of Portsmouth, Va.; three granddaughter, Penny R. Hite and husband, Larry, of Spring Grove, Lisa S. Dickens of Surry, and Rebecca Csutoras and husband, Rick of Red Lion, Pa. Mrs. Barnes had five great-grandchildren, William and Jesse Dickens of Surry; Melissa Hite Rickmond and husband, Scott, and Thomas Hite, all of Spring Grove; Aurelia C. Csutoras of Red Lion. Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by four brothers, Harry L. Grubbs, Jr., Clarence B. Grubbs, Elmer Grubbs, and Allan Grubbs; and two sisters, Dorothy M. Grubbs and Frances G. Joyner. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at Claremont Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dawson Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends at Purviance Chapel, J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, in Wakefield, Va., from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 2008. Memorial donations may be made to Claremont Baptist Church, P.O.
