AND ELEANOR BERRYMAN MAN KILLS WIFE, HIMSELF SMITHFIELD - The deaths of a woman and her husband in their small home at Burwell’s Bay Thursday night have been ruled murder and suicide by Dr. B.F. Jamison, Isle of Wight County medical examiner. Dr. Jamison said the bodies of Edward W. Berryman, 50, and his wife, Eleanor, 49, were found on the kitchen floor Thursday about 10 p.m. by a neighbor. Dr. Jamison said Mrs. Berryman died on a shotgun wound of the head. Her husband apparently then shot himself in the head Dr. Jamison said. Berryman was employed by Smithfield Packing Co. A native of Surry County, Berryman was a son of James W. and Mrs. Mary Judkins Berryman. He was a member of Bayview Methodist Church. He is survived by a brother, John A. Berryman of Prince George County; three sisters, Mrs. H.M. Berryman, Mrs. B.J. Logan and Miss Nellie Berryman of Elberon; and two daughters. Mrs. Glenn D. Scott of Smithfield and Mrs. Donald Raymer of Miami, Fla.; and two grandchildren. A native of Surry County, Mrs. Berryman was a daughter of Mrs. Bessie Bailey Lowe and the late Arthur C. Lowe. She was a member of Bayview Methodist Church. Besides her mother and daughters, she is survived by five sisters, Mrs. George Slaterback of Roanoke, Mrs. Wilbur [sic; Wilbert*] Pittman of Wakefield, Mrs. Leigh B. Jones of Ivor, Mrs. Marjorie Barlow of Smithfield, and Mrs. Allen Bulls of Richmond; and three brother, A.C. Lowe of Dendron, B.W. Lowe of Elberon and David Lowe of Richmond. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Oak Grove Cemetery in Surry County by the Rev. Charles P. Price and the Rev. Glenn Williams.
