Berryman, 60 Buried Wednesday In Pittsburgh, Pa. William Alfred Berryman, a resident of Pittsburgh for many years, died in a Pittsburgh hospital on Sunday, August 3rd at the age of 60, after a long illness. A native of Surry County, Mr. Berryman was the oldest son of Mrs. B.F. Dews and the late William R. Berryman. He resided in Richmond for some years, later moving to Pittsburgh. For six years, he, with his family, resided in Antwerp, where he was employed by the Gulf Oil Company, returning to Pittsburgh at the outbreak of World War II. For the past three years he had been a vice-president of the Gulf Company, and had traveled extensively in that capacity. The burial was in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, August 6th. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Rebecca Walker; a daughter, Miss Nancy; a foster-son, Emory Anderson, of Philadelphia; his mother, Mrs. B.F. Dews and a sister, Mrs. S.W. White, both of Elberon; three brothers, Henry L. of Smithfield, John R. of Los Angeles, and Edward W. of Aliquippa, Pa. as well as a number of nieces and nephews. ****************************************************************************** Vice President in charge of Foreign Marketing for Gulf Oil Corporation and a director of a number of its foreign marketing subsidiaries. Mr. Berryman was born near Williamsburg, VA and began his business career in Richmond. In 1917 he moved to Pittsburgh where he worked successively with the Pittsburgh Steel Company and the A.M. Byers Co. During WWII [sic; WWI] he served for nine months with the US Army. Upon his discharge in 1919, Mr. Berryman joined the firm of Ernst and Ernst, certified public accountants and spent the next two years in Pittsburgh working on a Gulf tax audit. He was transferred by the firm in 1921, to Washington, D.C. and again a year later, to Butler, PA. In 1923, Mr. Berryman joined the Standard Steel Car Co., as Assistant Comptroller. Mr. Berryman joined the Gulf organization in the Foreign Marketing Department in 1933, and was sent to Antwerp, Belgium where he was actively associated in the organization and management of some 30 marketing subsidiary companies. Following the outbreak of WWII, he returned to the Company's General Offices in Pittsburgh. Mr. Berryman was named Assistant to the Vice President in charge of Foreign Marketing in 1945. In May, 1949, he was elected a Vice President of Gulf Oil and appointed Assistant General Manager, Foreign Marketing Department. He was put in full charge of Foreign Marketing Operations in December 1949. In addition to his foreign marketing duties, Mr. Berryman also served as a Vice President of the Gulf European Co., and the Gulf Exploration Co.; Director and Vice President, Gulf Refining Co.; and Vice President Gulf Research and Development Co. He was a member of the Verona United Presbyterian Church, Verona, PA; the Duquesne Club, the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, and the Pittsburgh Field Club, Pittsburgh, and the Masonic Lodge and Chapter, Richmond. Mr. Berryman was buried August 6 at Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh. He is survived by his widow, Rebecca Walker Berryman, a daughter, and son, his mother, Betty Warren Dews, and sister Mrs. Samuel W. White, as well as three brothers.
