W.D. BREWER KILLED IN ACTION WALTER D. BREWER KILLED; R.C. LYONS MISSING, BOTH IN EUROPE Two turret gunners of the Army Air Forces, one from Chesapeake Beach and the other from Portsmouth, Va. been listed as casualties of the European war theatre, according to messages received by their parents. S/Sgt. Walter D. Brewer, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Brewer of Chesapeake Beach, was killed in action November 21. Sgt. Roland C. Lyons, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Lyons, of 4000 King Street, Portsmouth, has been missing in action since November 26. Sergeant Lyons was engineer and top turret gunner on a B-24 bomber. He had been stationed in England with the Eighth Air Force since September and had participated in several major air raids over Europe. Before induction in December, 1943, he was employed as an aircraft mechanic at the Norfolk Naval Air Station. Sergeant Brewer, a tail turret gunner with an Army Air Force stationed in England, was assigned overseas last summer and had completed almost 50 missions. His family has not been advised of any details of the operation in which he was killed. Brewer’s wife lives in Columbia, S.C. A sister, Mrs. L.P. McCullough, Jr., and a brother, L.M. Brewer, Jr., live in South Norfolk, at 1018 Jackson Street. A former student of Ruffner Junior High School, he was a manager of a Woolworth store in Laurel, Miss., before entering service in September, 1943. Picture: Staff Sgt. Walter Douglas Brewer, 27, of Norfolk, Va., was killed in action November 21. An assistant radio gunner on a B-24, he had been overseas since June, 1944, and held the Presidential citation, Air medal and two Oak Leaf Clusters. His widow, Mrs. Lois Dawson Brewer of Goldsboro, N.C., will make her home in Columbia with Attorney and Mrs. E. J. Best, her aunt and uncle. S/Sgt. His mother, Mary Eugenia (WHITMORE) BREWER, was killed in her pantry 1 Jul 1922, when lightning struck their Dendron home. She is buried with her parents & grandparents in Union Christian Church Cemetery.
