CHAPMAN, SURRY MERCHANT, BURIED MONDAY Graveside services for Putman Guy Chapman, who died at his home in Surry, Saturday, March 29, were conducted Monday at 3 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery in Surry, with Rev. J.O. Reed and the Rev. Robert J. Callis, officiating. Members of the Surry Masonic Lodge were in attendance. Mr. Chapman, a native of Surry County, had been in poor health for some time. At an early age he started working for the Surry Lumber Company and was employed by this company at Scotland as a lumber inspector until the company went out of business. Since that time he has run a mercantile business in Surry. In 1921, Mr. Chapman, became a member of Lodge No. 65 A.F. & A.M. and was Worshipful Master of the lodge in 1926. He had been a member of Surry Baptist Church for many years. He was a director of the Bank of Surry County, Inc. for twenty years and a member of the town Council since Oct. 13, 1931 and actively and conscientiously served in both capacities. Surviving him are his wife, Celeste Ellis Chapman; a sister, Mrs. C.T. Gwaltney; a niece, three nephews and two great-nephews, all of Surry. Pallbearers were Raymond F. Cofer, Clyde Cofer, T.N Crymes, G.P. Logan, J.F. Judkins, Eugene Humphries, Will Berryman and Dennis Enos. ****************************************************************************** P.G. Chapman, 63, Of Surry, Buried Monday, Mar. 31st Putnam Guy Chapman, 63, a merchant of Surry, died at his home Saturday afternoon after a brief illness. Surviving other than his wife are one sister, Mrs. Belle Chapman Gwaltney, several nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held Monday at 3 P.M. in Oakwood Cemetery, Surry. Masonic rites were observed in the service.
