Cooper, 83, one of Surry's oldest citizens, died Monday afternoon after suffer- ing from severe burns when his clothing caught fire from a brush fire in his yard. Trial Justice C. G. Rowell saw the accident and with the aid of two colored men, Isham King and John Lane, wrapped the aged man in a blanket and sub- dued the brush fire. Dr. B. H. Knight was summoned but Mr. Cooper died after failing to re- spond to treatment. The deceased came to Surry after 20-odd years ago [sic] from the Rocky Hock community and op- erated Cooper's sawmill until retirement a few years ago. Surviving by are four sons: F. S. Cooper, of Wakefield; C. L., V. W. and C. D. Cooper, of Washing- ton; one daughter, Mrs. L. W. Brittle, of Washington, and one brother, J. W. Cooper, of Amelia, Va. Funeral rites were held at the Traylor & Purviance Funer- al Home at Wakefield at 3 o'- clock Wednesday afternoon with burial in the family cemetery near Carsley. Pallbearers were Willie Pitt- man, Joe Green, Joe Seward, Roy Edwards, of Surry; R. M. Pond, S. A. Whitmore, Garland Goodrich and C. M. Ellis, Sr., of Wakefield. Charles C. COOPER, retired sawmill operator, formerly of Rocky Hock, burnt & died 5 May 1952, at home, Surry Co., age 83, interred in the family cemetery*, near Carsley, 7 May 1952, donated obit, publication unknown [May 5- '52 in pencil] *location not known (Apr 2016) to the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project.
