He is a member of Dendron Methodist Church. He was the local auctioneer for the past ten years and a retired farmer; veteran of the Army, WWI; Past American Legion Commander of Barracks 1313 in Waverly. He taught thirteen years as vocational agricultural instructor for the Veterans Administration. He was a Charter Member of the Blackwater Sportsmen’s Club; a Past President of the Federal Land Bank and a Board Member of the Production Credit Association. He was formerly, for five years, Chairman of the Surry County School board and he had served as deputy Sheriff and Justice of the Peace, Surry County. He is survived by his wife, O’Lean Baird Cofer of Dendron; a son, Kenneth B. Cofer, five grandchildren, Deborah Kay Cofer, Terri Lyn Cofer, Karen Paige Cofer, Alison Gail Cofer, Thomas Holt Cofer, all of Richmond; one brother Raymond F. Cofer of Surry, two sisters, Mrs. Will M. Holdsworth of Disputanta, Mrs. J.A. Rogers of Hampton. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 26, at 2:30 P.M. at the Purivance Funeral Chapel in Wakefield. Burial will be in the Waverly Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society and will be receiving friends at the funeral home Monday evening, 7 to 9. *Alonzo in original corrected to Alonza.
