CLYDE LYONS COFER 

CLYDE L. COFER DIES, WAS WELL KNOWN IN SURRY 

  Clyde Lyons Cofer, a lifelong resident of Surry, died Sunday, Mar. 22, 1987, 
in Norfolk General Hospital following a brief illness.

  He was past chairman of the administrative board and a member of the Board 
of Trustees of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Surry.  He was a trustee of 
the church cemetery.

  He retired in 1973 from the Bank of Surry (now a branch of First Virginia 
Bank-Commonwealth) after 50 years of service.  He began his career with the 
bank in 1923 as a clerk and was vice president of the bank at his retirement. 
He continued in an advisory capacity on the Board of Directors of the bank 
until his death.

  He served as Treasurer and Clerk of the Town of Surry for 53 years, retiring 
Dec. 31, 1981.

  He was a member and past master of Jefferson Lodge No. 65 A.F. & A.M., 
Surry, and was a member of the Surry Ruritan Club.

  He served on the first Board of Directors of Patrick Henry Hospital in 
Newport News and was a member of the Advisory Board of the hospital at the 
time of his death.

  Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Nolan Cofer; a daughter, Mrs. Beulah 
C. Mitchell of Norfolk; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

  A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, Mar. 24, in Purviance Funeral Home, 
Wakefield, by the Rev. Samuel Askew III and the Rev. Emmett Diggs.

  Burial, with Masonic Rites, was in Oak Grove Church Cemetery.

  Memorial donations are suggested to Oak Grove Methodist Church or to the 
Surry County Volunteer Rescue Squad.
