He was a native of Surry County and the husband of Mrs. Betty Jones Cofer. He was a 20-year employee of Virginia Department of Highways, working in the Surry Ferry System. He was a member of Dendron United Methodist Church. Other survivors include a daughter, Miss Connie Diane Cofer and mother, Mrs. Clarice Cofer of the home. A funeral was held Tuesday in Purviance Funeral Chapel, Wakefield, by the Rev. D.L. Bays. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park. His mother, [Elton] Clarice (MATTHEWS) COFER (1908-1986), is buried with her parents, James Robert & Hannah Adeline "Addie" (HOLDSWORTH) MATTHEWS, in Rocky Hock Methodist Church Cemetery, near Wakefield.
