All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ESSIE NUNNALLY COFER ESSIE COFER, 87, DIES; FORMER SURRY OFFICIAL SURRY - Essie Nunnally Cofer, 87, former deputy treasurer and registrar for Surry County, died yesterday at Chowan Hospital in Edenton, N.C. A county native, Mrs. Cofer was registrar from 1929 to 1947 and was deputy treasurer from 1963 to 1976. She also taught in public schools from 1920 to 1927. Mrs. Cofer was a member of Surry United Methodist Church, where she was treasurer and taught in the youth department for many years. She was the widow of Raymond Francis Cofer. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Deane C. Thomas of Edenton, and a sister, Mrs. Helen N. Seward of Elberon. A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday in Oakwood Cemetery in Surry. Memorial contributions may be made to the Surry Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Volunteer Fire Department or Surry United Methodist Church. ****************************************************************************** ESSIE NUNNALLY COFER SURRY - Mrs. Essie Nunnally Cofer, of Edenton, N.C., died Dec. 28, 1989, at Chowan Hospital in Edenton, N.C. A native of Surry County, Va. and the widow of Raymond Francis Cofer. Mrs. Cofer lived in Surry until moving to Edenton, N.C. in February, 1984. Mrs. Cofer taught in Surry County Public School system from 1920 - 1927, teaching in Dendron, Elberon, Spring Grove and Swan’s Point schools during this time. Following her teaching career she became Deputy Treasurer of Surry County in 1929 and served until 1947. In 1963, Mrs. Cofer became Registrar for Surry County and served in this capacity until she retired in 1976. She was also a bookkeeper for Surry Implement County. Mrs. Cofer was a member of the Surry United Methodist Church and served as church treasurer for many years. She taught in the church school youth department for many years. She was formerly a member of the Surry Woman’s Club. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Deane C. Thomas of Edenton, N.C.; a sister, Helen N. Seward of Elberon, Va.; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A graveside funeral service was held in Oakwood Cemetery, Surry, Dec. 29 by Rev. Donna Marie Foos. Memorial donations may be made to the Surry Volunteer Rescue Squad, or the Surry United Methodist Church. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, handled arrangements. Essie (NUNNALLY; Mrs. Raymond F.)
