He was a life-long farmer of Surry County and Deputy Sheriff of Surry County for the past forty years. He was a member of Dendron United Methodist Church; an employee of Purviance Funeral Home for thirty-five years; Assistant Letter Carrier at Dendron Post Office for eight years; Charter member of Blackwater Sportsman Club; member of Surry County Ruritan Club; 1975 Citizenship Award and Surry County Man-of- the-Year. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Pauline Johnson Cofer; one daughter, Alice Ruth Cofer of Richmond; one son, Malcolm T. Cofer of Smithfield; a grandson, Thomas E. Cofer of Smithfield; two brothers, A. Clyde Cofer of Dendron and Raymond F. Cofer of Surry; two sisters, Mrs. Will M. Holdsworth of Disputana and Mrs. John M. Rogers of Hampton. Funeral services will be held at the Purviance Funeral chapel, Wakefield, Monday, January 24, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Waverly Cemetery. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Surry Rescue Squad or Dendron United Methodist Church.
