DIXON COCKES Family and friends will honor the life of E. Dixon Cockes at a memorial service Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. at Purviance Funeral Home Chapel in Wakefield, with the Rev. Paul Harfst officiating. The family will receive friends at the chapel 30 minutes prior to the service. Dixon, 66, a former resident of Surry County, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, while traveling in Missouri. He was the son of the late Elbert O. & Mary White Cockes of Surry. He was a 1950 graduate of Fork Union Military Academy and a 1954 graduate of Virginia Military Institute. He served a distinguished military career as a U.S. Air Force pilot, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel. Earning various award and medals, his career included service at Cape Canaveral Manned Space Flight Recovery at Patrick AFB, FL; as Minuteman Missile Combat Crew Commander at Malmstrom AFB, MT; and as Minuteman Missile Squadron Commander at Ellsworth AFB, SD. Overseas assignments included tours of duty in Vietnam, Iceland and Alaska. A former member of Surry Baptist Church, he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of great Falls, MT. He and Shirley enjoyed memberships in various recreational vehicle organizations and traveled extensively. Dixon is survived by his wife, Shirley Seward Cockes; three daughters, Lisa C. Judkins, and her husband Tommy of Surry, Vicki C. Thompson and her husband Barry of Yorktown, Suzanne L. Cockes of Anchorage, AK; and grandchildren, Ben, Tom, Cathy, Laura, Aaron, Amanda and Daniel. Dixon was predeceased by a daughter, Debra C. Cockes, earlier this year. Memorial donations may be made to Surry Vol. Rescue Squad, Surry County Vol. Fire Department; or a non-profit wildness preservation organization. Burial will be private. Lt. Col. E.
