She was born in Surry County, Va., to William Peyton Hargrave and Estelle Harvell Hargrave. At the death of her mother at a young age, her uncle and aunt, Mark Dennis Harvell and Nancy "Carrie" Lawrence Harvell took her in to raise and after adopted. Hylah lived her life on the family ancestral farm, Harewell, in Southampton County, Va. She graduated from Ivor High School. She put her desire to be a nurse on hold to be a housewife and mother. In later years, she graduated from nursing school fulfilling her desire to be a nurse. She was predeceased by her husband, Vernon Hayes Clarke. She is survived by her son, Dennis Hayes Clarke and wife, Debra; three grandchildren, Sandy Lindsey (Pryor), Tim Clarke (Christen) and Jennifer Clarke; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at the Wakefield Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home, with the Reverend Anne Beale officiating. Interment to follow in Waverly Cemetery. The family will received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
