WAKEFIELD - Mr. Turner Monroe Drewry, Jr., 63, died Saturday at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk. He was born in Surry County and was a farm machinery mechanic. He was a member of Rocky Hock United Methodist Church. He was the lead saxophonist for a local band, The Dixie Vagabonds. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Catherine Brittle Drewry; one daughter, Mrs. Ann D. Hays of Tucson, Ariz.; and three grandchildren. ****************************************************************************** ROCKY HOCK CHURCH BULLETIN - REMEMBERING: TURNER M. DREWRY, JR. - 1924 - 1987 Turner was born and lived in the Rocky Hock community all of his life. He married Catherine Brittle and they had one daughter, Ann Drewry Hays, and three grandchildren. Turner shared his love for music whenever he could, but especially enjoyed sharing this love of music with his grandson, Daniel, who also loves music. Turner Drewry, Jr. was a talented musician. He played the tenor saxophone for the band "The Firehouse Five." The name for this band came about because of the location of their practices, the Wakefield firehouse. Over the years, some of the other member of this band include Jack Seely, Billy Eure, Wilbur Burch, and Junior Seeley. Turner also played in the band "The Virginians." Turner was a mechanic at the John Deere dealer in Wakefield, Cogsdale Implement Company. Catherine was the bookkeeper for Wakefield Oil Company, the Gulf Oil dealer in Wakefield. Turner later opened his own machinery repair shop, Turner Repair Service, adjacent to his home in the Rocky Hock community, and Catherine was the bookkeeper for his business. In his memory, his wife, Catherine, donated the chimes to go with the organ at Rocky Hock Church. Catherine is living in Williamsburg at the Consulate Health Care facility. Turner is buried in Rocky Hock Cemetery. Thanks to Laura Anne Goodrich for securing the information and photograph.
