M. "Morris" Ellis, Jr., was born and reared in "Little Surry" on the farm that is located at the intersection of White Marsh Road and Aberdeen Road. After farming for about 20 years, he retired so he could devoted more time to his hobbies of hunting and fishing, and traveling around the country in his motorhome with his wife, Ruby, whom he married in 1939. Ruby was a Wakefield girl - the daughter of Gurney Goodrich, inventor of the peanut digger, and granddaughter of Benuamin Hawkins and Ansebelia Bailey Goodrich. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, her garden and flowers. Both Morris and Ruby were very active and devoted to Rocky Hock Church. Morris taught the Men's Bible Class, was a trustee, and the treasurer of the Sunday school. Ruby was active in the Ladies Aid Society, today known as the UMW, taught classes in the children's Sunday school and helped with Vacation Bible School crafts in the summer. Together they worked with the youth of the church through MYF taking the youth on many outings and several overnight trips. Morris and Reverend Bland became good friends during Reverend Bland's tenure as pastor at Rocky Hock Church, and this friendship continued when Reverend Bland retired to Little Surry. Morris loved to hunt and fish, and many times would carry guests with him when he fished the York River. He always looked out for his guests accommodating their needs, whether it was bait and tackle or food and snacks. Ruby was always sharing projects and recipes she was working on in her Home Demonstration Club. Morris and Ruby loved Rocky Hock Church and, upon his death, bequeathed a generous monetary donation to the church. They are both buried in Rocky Hock Cemetery.
