All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ THOMAS JEFFERSON GWALTNEY BURIED ON FARM WHERE HE HAD LIVED ALL HIS LIFE Funeral services for Thomas Jefferson Gwaltney prominent Surry County farmer, who died Friday were conducted from his residence yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock by the Rev. R.A. McKay, pastor of Mill Swamp Baptist church, of which Mr. Gwaltney had been a member for many years. Interment was in the family cemetery on the Gwaltney farm where Mr. Gwaltney died. An unusually large crowd attended the funeral and the floral offerings also were unusually large. Honorary pallbearers were G.K. Little, S.E. Thomas, J.J. Holloman, C.J. Little, T.H. Delk, and R.J. Little. Active pallbearers were E.F. Little, W.H. Ramsey, J.C. Little, G.W. White, C.S. Delk and L.V. Little. Mr. Gwaltney, who never married was 79 years of age at the time of his death and he had lived all his life on the Gwaltney Farm which has been in the family for many generation. He was one of the best known men in his section of the state. He was born September 7, 1854, the son of the late James and Amanda Gwaltney. The old plantation is located near the Mill Swamp Baptist Church, of which he as a member. For many years he had been one of the leading figures in the agricultural life of that section and was widely known for his kindliness, generosity and good work. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Berta Pitt, of Chuckatuck; a niece, Mrs. Lucille Laschott, of South Carolina, and three nephews, P.G. Pitt, of Chuckatuck; P.W. Gwaltney, of Richmond; and W.J. Gwaltney, of Norfolk. The old Gwaltney farm has been passed down from one generation of the family to another for more than a century and a half. In the cemetery on the farm the members of his family, since they settled in Surry County, have been buried.
