Holland Of Surry Buried At Arlintgton Funeral services for Sgt. Elbert Holland, 31, were held Friday, September 10th in Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Myers, Va. Sgt. Holland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Holland, of Surry, was born and reared in Surry County and attended Surry High School. He entered the armed services on September 26, 1942, at Camp Lee and was shipped to Camp Bullis, Texas, for basic training. In November he was sent to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, where he remained until sent to Northern Ireland in October 1943. In April 1944 his company moved to Wales where it awaited D-Day. He participated in the French invasion and was killed August 4, 1944, near Vire in Normandy, France. He served with the 2nd Division, known as "Indian Head", in Company K of the 23rd Infantry. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Holland and one brother, William A. Holland, all of Surry. Sgt. Elbert Hubert "Herman" HOLLAND, Co. K, 23rd Infantry, 2nd Division, b. 28 Nov 1917, Bacons Castle, Surry Co., KIA 4 Aug 1944, near Vire, Normandy, France, interred in Arlington National Cemetery*, 9 Sep 1948, "The Smithfield (VA) Times," Vol. 31, No. 16, Sep. 15, 1948, p. 1, col. 7 Birthdate &c. from B.Cert. 53268 (Cobham #33), which gives Elbert Hubert, son of William Hubert & Martha Virginia (SCOTT) HOLLAND. WW-II draft card gives Elbert Herman, & is signed Herman. His parents & paternal grandfather William Z. HOLLAND are buried in the Old Brick Church Cemetery, Bacons Castle. Find a Grave calls it Lower Surry Cemetery.
