George Moody Hargrave was in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and served in the Surry Light Artillery at the rank of sergeant. During much of the War, he served around the defenses of Richmond and saw action several times. His first wife died and had no children*. He then married Sarah Wilkerson Davis in 1880. Sarah's mother was the second wife of John Hawkins Pond - please refer to the December 30th, 2007 bulletin. The first minister of the newly created Wakefield Charge, Dr. J.T. Mastin, married them. He is in the group picture of past ministers displayed in Rocky Hock Church. George was a farmer after the war, and his farm is where Moyler Pond lives today. George and Sarah had three children; Bernard, who lived in Franklin most of his life; Bessie, Mrs. Harry L. Harris, lived in Wakefield on Wilson Avenue; and Garland M., who married Ray Bailey, one of Robert Bailey's daughters, and lived in Petersburg most of his life, but moved back to Wakefield shortly before his death. After George died, Sarah married Hosea H. Carroll, who was the overseer of her farm while she was married to George. They had no children. Sarah and George are both buried in Rocky Hock Cemetery. They were the grandparents of the late Elwood L. Harris of Wakefield. Thanks to Verna Harris for the pictures and to Fay Savedge for the information. Sgt.
