W.D. Harward, D.D., aged 71, for 40 years a widely known minister in the Christian Church, died at his home in Dendron, Monday. He had been in ill health for several years. Dr. Harward had served several charges in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Windsor, and it was while he was in Windsor that he was stricken with paralysis that contributed to his death. He was a native of Durham, N.C., and was a graduate of Elon College and the University of North Carolina. He was a member of the Eastern Virginia Christian Conference, and was highly regarded by the various churches he served. Dr. Harward is survived by his wife, Mollie Barrett Harward; one son, W. Eugene Harward, of Washington; a sister-in-law, Mrs. D.J. Bowden, of Norfolk, and two grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Dendron Christian Church by the Rev. I.W. Johnson, D.D., the Rev. G.F. Wright, and the Rev. B.H. Watkins.
