All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Sidney Thomas Johnson Buried Dendron - Funeral services for Sidney Thomas Johnson of near Dendron, Surry County, Virginia, whose death occurred early Friday morning, September 4, 1942, were conducted Sunday, September 6, 1942, at his home by the Rev. Geo. M. Bishop. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Surry, Va. The son of David Peyton Johnson and Mahala Elizabeth Rogers, born January 20, 1868, in Surry County where he resided all his life. He was a successful farmer. He was twice married, first to Mary Etta Cotten, from which union the following children were born and survive: Albert S. Johnson, of Surry, Hugh T. Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. E.L. Madison of Norfolk, Mrs. Carl Pierce of Jacksonville, Fla. Second marriage to Ruth Ella Rogers. From this union the following children were born and survive: Mrs. E.A. Fox and Miss Edna Johnson of Newport News, and Mrs. T. Linwood Cofer of Dendron. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and three brothers, W.L. Johnson, A.B. Johnson and J.F. Johnson; a number of nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Active pallbearers were K.C. Bishop, A.C. Cofer, G.C. Slade, Madison W. Berryman, Ralph Rogers and Herbert Rogers. D.Cert. 21240 (Guilford Dist.) Ancestry.com VA Copiled Marriages 1740-1850 gives William B. AVERY & Margaret S. RISPESS, m. 7 Jan 1834 in Surry Co. His father (5 Aug 1840 - 12 Aug 1919) was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Battery B, 12th VA Light Artillery. He was detailed for a time as a wagon driver, and later as a courier. His mother (10 Sep 1844 - 8 May 1923) applied for a pension 15 Mar 1920.
