McGURIMAN, 16, KILLED WHEN AUTO TURNED OVER SUN. A teen-ager died and two others were hospitalized when the car in which they were riding plunged off the road at a curve between Dendron and Surry. Killed in the accident was Edwin Lee McGuriman, 16, of RFD Surry, near Bacon’s Castle community. The fatal accident which occurred about 11 p.m. Sunday night, February 1, 1953, sent Thomas Dashiell III, of Smithfield, to the Louise Obici Memorial Hospital for treatment of a laceration of the eye. Dashiell was identified as the driver of the car which lurched from the road and turned over. He was admitted to hospital and considered in "fair" condition on Monday by hospital authorities. Lorena Baker, 17, of Surry also received hospital treatment as a result of the accident. She received hospital treatment with a dislocated shoulder. Emily Gayle Berryman, of Surry, was reported as another of the car’s passengers. She did not require hospital treatment according to a report. The McGuriman boy was the son of Allie H. McGuriman of RFD 1, Surry. He was a junior at Surry High School. ____________________ E.L. McGURIMAN, 16, BURIED TUESDAY AT BACONS CASTLE Edwin Lee McGuriman, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allie H. McGuriman, of Surry, was killed instantly Sunday at 11:30 p.m. in an automobile accident on Route 31 between Dendron and Surry. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allie H. McGuriman and one brother, Allie H. McBuriman, Jr., all of Surry. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 3, 1953, at 3 p.m. at the Bacon’s Castle Baptist Church by the Rev. J.F. Colston of Winton, N.C. Burial was in Old Brick Cemetery, Bacons Castle. The funeral procession left the Jones Funeral Home in Smithfield at 2:15 p.m. Pallbearers were Walter Pittman, David Hux, Garland Seward, Kenneth Cofer, Robert Cooke, Richard Andrews. Honorary pallbearers were the Junior Class of Surry High School and the Intermediate Sunday School Class of Bacons Castle Church. The car was driven by Thomas Dashiell, III, of Smithfield, who was admitted to Obici Hospital as a patient and for treated for injuries. Find a Grave has it listed as Lower Surry Cemetery; they also give Old Brick Church Cemetery, separately; both refer to the same site, where the Lawns Creek Parish Church stood, just outside Bacons Castle. His gravestone is pictured with his Memorial, #68148738. Birthdate &c. from D.Cert. #5626 (Blackwater #2). An obit for Edwin also appearred in "The Daily Press," Feb. 3, 1953.
