Gholson Franklin Maynard, known as "Golie," was a farmer and farmed the land across from where Richard and Carol Andrews live today. The farm is known to us in the community as "Miss Bertie's." They lived there on the farm all their lives. The house they lived in was built in the 1700s, dismantled in the 20th century, moved and restored as a bed and breakfast establishment located on Rocky Bottom Road in Surry County. Gholson was an appointed deputy tax collector in Surry County, and rode a horse around his district to collect county taxes. He and his wife, Rosa Bell Rebecca Atkinson Maynard, had three children; Joseph Crawley, a farmer and chairman of Blackwater District school board and lived on a farm across the road from his childhood home; Bertie, who married John Presson from Dendron and continued to live in her childhood home after the death of her husband; and Odie, who never married and lived in her childhood home her entire life. Both Gholson and Rosa are buried in Rocky Hock Cemetery, Miss Bertie [sic; Birdie] was responsible for having the window honoring her parents placed in Rocky Hock Church. Thanks to Rebecca Maynard Gwaltney, granddaughter of Golie and Rosa (whom she was named after) and daughter of Joseph Crawley Maynard for this information and the picture.
