Miss Pond retired in 1964 after a 43-year career in the state's public schools, 26 years of which were in the Hopewell system. She began her teaching career in 1921 in the Caroline, Russell and Wise County public school systems, and in 1937 began teaching in the Hopewell schools. In 1946, she became elementary school supervisor for the Hopewell and Prince George County school systems, a position she held until her retirement. Miss Pond was a graduate of Dendron High School in Surry County and a 1919 graduate of Virginia Intermont College in Bristol. She attended Peabody Music Conservatory and was a 1936 graduate of Radford State Teachers College. She received her master’s degree in education from the University of Virginia in 1958 and was a member of Kappa Delta Phi honorary educational sorority at U.Va. She was a member of Rocky Hock United Methodist Church. Survived by a brother, Lyle H. Pond of Wakefield; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Purviance Funeral Home. Graveside service at 2 p.m. Sunday in Rocky Hock United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Jess V. She was the daughter of the late John W. and Eva Edwards Pond. She was a retired school teacher and administrator. She retired in 1964 after a 43-year career in the state’s public schools, 26 of which were in the Hopewell system. She began her teaching career in 1921 in the Caroline, Russell and Wise County public school systems, and 1937 began teaching in the Hopewell schools. She served as assistant to the director of the McGuffey Reading Clinic for the summer session at the University of Virginia in 1962. She was a member of the Virginia Education Association and was secretary to the regional supervisor for the VEA for two years. She was a member of Rocky Hock United Methodist Church. Survivors include a brother, Lyle H. Pond of Wakefield. A graveside service was conducted Dec. 8, at Rocky Hock United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Jess V. Staton.
