Pond, 86, were held Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. at the residence, with burial in Rocky Hock Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. L.P. Bland officiated and was assisted by Rev. Benjamin B. Bland, of Laurel Methodist Church of Varina. The choir of Rocky Hock furnished the music. Active pallbearers were O.L. Holt, Arthur L. Presson, Howard E. Drewry, Jr., Ernest W. Goodrich, B.E. Cowling, Sr., Dr. R.B. McEwen, J. Franklin White, and Paul W. Rogers. Honorary pallbearers were friends of the family. Mr. Pond, one of Surry’s oldest citizens, was born March 29, 1869, at "Oak View," Surry County, the son of John Hawkins Pond and Elizabeth Vick Pond. He was a brother of the late Charles A. and Walter J. Pond, of Surry County, Mrs. G.A. Harris, of Suffolk, Mrs. L.J. Bain, of Capron, and Mrs. Sarah Hargrave Carroll, of Wakefield. He was a graduate of Suffolk Military Academy and of Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1889. For a short period, he was a construction engineer for the Yadkin Railroad at Salisbury, N.C. After teaching in Sussex County and at Bowling Green Academy in Bowling Green, Va., he returned to the farm where he spent the rest of his life. He was a former member of the Surry County School Board, and active in church work, serving as superintendent of Rocky Hock Sunday School for 15 years and as trustee and steward of the church for over 50 years. His wife, the former Eva Elmyra Edwards, of Surry County, died in 1947. Of this union, there survives one daughter, Miss Eleanor R. Pond, of Hopewell; two sons, Lyle H. Pond, of Wakefield, and Clarence E. Pond, of Roanoke; three grandchildren, one great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. ****************************************************************************** JOHN WESLEY AND EVA EDWARDS POND - Memorial Bulletin John Wesley Pond (1868 - 1955) was born "Oak View" plantation in Surry County, and was the son of John Hawkins and Elizabeth Vick Pond. He married Eva Edwards Pond (1873-1947), also of Surry County, in 1897. They had four children - Lyle, Eleanor, Clarence, and Wesley (died in infancy). John Wesley was a graduate of VMI, and upon graduation he taught in the public and private schools for several years. Later he was a construction engineer for the Yadkin Railroad in North Carolina before returned to Surry County to establish his home on part of "Oak View." Upon his return, he became very active in his community and his church. He served as a member of the Surry County School Board and a member of Rocky Hock Church, serving as superintendent of the Sunday school for 15 years, and as a Trustee and Steward of the church for over 50 years. They were the parents of Lyle Pond who resided in the home where Terry and Roger Vander Vennet live today. John and Eva are both buried in Rocky Hock Cemetery.
