POND WAKEFIELD - Lyle Hawkins Pond, age 79, a life-long resident of Surry County and a retired farmer, died Thursday, July 3, 1997, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk. Active in his church and community throughout his life, Mr. Pond was the son of late John Wesley and Eva Edwards Pond. As a member of Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, he served as a Sunday school teacher in the Adult Men’s Department, chairman of the Administrative Board, a member of the Board of Trustee and assistant Sunday school superintendent. He was a past president of the Wakefield Masonic Lodge No. 198, A.F.& A.M. and past district deputy grand master of the 30th District. Mr. Pond served on the Surry County Planning Commission from 1965 - 1985 and as chairman of the Surry County Board of Zoning Appeals from 1975 - 1985. He was past president of the Farm Bureau of Surry County. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Fraughnaugh Pond; a daughter, Susan Pond Gilbert, Pittsburg, Pa.; two sons, John Al Pond, Atlanta, Ga.; David Lyle Pond, Charlotte, N.C.; and six grandchildren and a niece. A funeral service will be held in Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, Wakefield, on Sunday, July 6, 1997, at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Randy Duncan. Burial with Masonic rites will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence on Rocky Hock Road, Wakefield. Memorial donations may be made to Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, c/o J.C. Whitmore Jr., 2847 White Marsh Road, Wakefield, Va. 23888, or to a charity of your choice. Rafferty, Editor SURRY - A standout in the Surry community died last Thursday at the age of 79. Very involved in his church and his community, Lyle Hawkins Pond, son of the late John Wesley and Eva Edwards Pond, died at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital in Suffolk. Mr. Pond was a member of the Surry County Planning commission from 1965 - 1985, and Chairman of the Surry County Board of Zoning Appeals from 1975 to 1985.
