LYLE HAWKINS POND 

LYLE H. POND DIES AT AGE 79

  SURRY - A standout in the Surry community died last Thursday at the age of 
79.

  Very involved in his church and his community, Lyle Hawkins Pond, son of the 
late John Wesley and Eva Edwards Pond, died at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital 
in Suffolk.

  Mr. Pond was a member of the Surry County Planning commission from 1965 - 
1985, and Chairman of the Surry County Board of Zoning Appeals from 1975 to 
1985.  He also served as president of the Farm Bureau of Surry County.

  As a member of Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, Mr. Pond served as Sunday 
school teacher in the Adult Men’s Department; chairman of the Administrative 
Board; a member of the Board of Trustee; and Assistant Sunday School 
Superintendent.

  Mr. Pond was a past President of the Wakefield Ruritan Club and an active 
participant of the annual Wakefield Ruritan Club Shad Planking.  He was Past 
Master of Wakefield Masonic Lodge #198, A.F.& A.M. and Past District Deputy 
Grand Master of the 30th District.

  Mr. Pond is survived by his wife, Ruth Fraughnaugh Pond; a daughter, Susan 
Pond Gilbert, Pittsburgh, PA; two sons, Al Pond, Atlanta, GA, and David Lyle 
Pond, Charlotte, NC; sic grandchildren; and one niece.

  A funeral service was held at Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, Wakefield, 
on Sunday, July 6, at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Randy Duncan.  A burial, with Masonic 
Rites, was held in the church cemetery.

  Memorial donations may be made to Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, c/o 
J.C. Whitmore, Jr., 2847 White Marsh Road, Wakefield, VA, 23888, or to a 
charity of your choice.  PurvIance Funeral Home, Wakefield, handled the 
arrangements.
