He was a native of Surry County and a member of Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, Wakefield, where he had served as superintendent of the Sunday school for nearly 50 years, He was also a former chairman of the administrative board, served as treasurer for many years, and taught the Youth Sunday school class. He was the last surviving charter member of the Wakefield Ruritan Club and the oldest surviving charter member of Ruritan National. He was a member of Virginia Tech Corps, Class of 1927; the General William Mahone Camp, Sons of the Confederate Veterans, Wakefield; and the Farmers Hunt Club. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Thorpe Pond; a daughter, Dianne P. Coggin of Virginia Beach; a son, R. Moyler Pond, Jr., of Wakefield; a sister, Dorothy M. Pond of Richmond; and eight grandchildren. A funeral was held April 7 in Rocky Hock United Methodist Church by the Revs. Jess Staton and Robert Consolvo. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, Ivor Rescue Squad or Waverly Rescue Squad. Arrangements were made by Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield.
