The injured man was admitted to the hospital at 8:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. ****************************************************************************** WALTER POND FATALLY INJURED IN PEANUT PICKER ACCIDENT Funeral services for Walter M. Pond, 48, well-known farmer of Surry County, who died at Lakeview Hospital, Suffolk, Wednesday morning at 11:45, will be conducted at "Oakview" the family home near Wakefield on Friday, Nov. 17 at 3:00 p.m. Rev. J.L. Blankenship, Jr., will officiate. Interment will be in Rocky Hock Cemetery. Mr. Pond died of injuries received Tuesday afternoon when he was caught in a peanut picker operating on his farm. It is thought that he was attempting to oil or adjust the picker near the main driving pulley when his sleeve was caught and he was flailed against the machine. Helpers, hearing his yells, shut off the power and extricated him. Unconscious from a fractured skull and with an arm broken in two places, he was carried to the house in a small truck and then rushed to the hospital. He never regained full consciousness. Death was attributed to a fractured skull. He was the son of the late Walter Jackson Pond and Sallie Q. Moyler and a lifelong resident of Surry County. He had served as steward in the Rocky Hock Methodist Church and as treasurer of the Sunday school for many years. He was Charter member of the Wakefield Ruritan Club and a director of the Bank of Sussex and Surry. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace Harris Pond; two foster sons, Steve and Raymond Pond; two sisters, Mrs. George L. Munford of Wakefield and Miss Dorothy M. Pond of Petersburg; one brother, Robert M. Pond of Wakefield; one niece, Miss Anne Moyler Munford, and one nephew, Robert Moyler Pond Jr. Active pallbearers will be O.L. Holt, A.L. Presson, B.E. Cowling, Sr., H.E. Drewry, Morris Ellis, Sol I. Jenkins, Cordie Andrews, Stanley Cooper, Garland Goodrich and E.W. Pond Jr.; both of Wakefield. ****************************************************************************** THE HISTORY OF OUR (ROCKY HOCK) CHURCH PEWS: "IN MEMORY OF WALTER MOYLER POND" Walter M. Pond was born on Oak View Farm in 1900, and was a lifelong resident of Surry County. He began attending Rocky Hock Church with his brother and two sisters as a small child and was a longtime member until his untimely death in 1950 due to a farming accident. At the time of his death, he was treasurer of the Parsonage Committee, a Trustee of the Parsonage, a Trustee of the Church, a member of the Finance Committee, a member of the Board of Stewards and was treasurer of the Sunday school for 20 years. He was a charter member of the Wakefield Ruritan Club and a director of the Bank of Sussex and Surry. Walter married Grace Harris in 1939 and moved her to Oak View Farm where she lived for the remainder of her years until her death in 1989. The church pew at Rocky Hock was given by his loving wife, Grace H. Pond, in the name of their children, Steven R. and Raymond M. Pond, as noted in the November 21, 1954, Dedication Bulletin. Both Walter and Grace lived the Christian family of Rocky Hock Church, and Rocky Hock was a major part of their lives for many years. Reverend J.L. Blankenship, Jr. conducted Walter's funeral at Oak View Farm, the family home. Walter and Grace are both buried in Rocky Hock Cemetery.
