POND, 82, SURRY COUNTY, WILL BE BURIED WAKEFIELD - Aug. 14 - Walter Jackson Pond, 82, of "Oakview Farm," Surry County, died Tuesday at his home. Funeral service will be conducted at the home at his home at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the family plot in Rocky Hock Cemetery. Mr. Pond was the son of John Hawkins Pond and Elizabeth Vick Davis Pond. He spent his entire life at the family home, "Oakview," which was built by his grandfather in 1845. He had been a director of the Bank of Sussex and Surry, Wakefield, since 1914. As a small boy he joined the Rocky Hock Methodist Church and served for 33 years as superintendent of the Sunday school. He served as a member of the board of stewards and for 50 years served as treasurer of the church and was recording steward of the Wakefield Circuit composed of the Wakefield, Ivor, and Rocky Hock churches. His wife, the former Sallie Q. Moyler, of Sussex County, died in 1939. He is survived by four children, Mrs. George L. Munford, Walter M. Pond, Robert M. Pond, and Miss Dorothy M. Pond, of Wakefield; two brothers, Charles A. Pond, of Powhatan Courthouse, John W. Pond of Surry County, and a sister, Mrs. J.L. Bain, of Capron; two grandchildren, Anne Moyler Munford and Robert M. Pond, Jr. and a number of nieces and nephews. ****************************************************************************** WALTER JACKSON POND WALTER POND DIED TUESDAY AT OAK VIEW Mr. Walter Jackson Pond, 82, better known as "Wattie" Pond, of "Oak View" farm, Surry, died Tuesday afternoon at his home after having been in ill health for the past 36 years. Funeral service was conducted at the home at 11 o’clock Thursday morning by the Rev. Samuel L. Dumville, pastor of Rocky Hock Methodist Church. He was assisted by the Rev. W.L. Ware, of Richmond, Rev. W.G. Bates, Jr., of Matthews, former pastors and Rev. L.F. Callahan of Boykins. Burial was made in the family plot in Rocky Hock Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Stanley Cooper, Howard Drewry. O.L. Holt, Arthur Presson, Cordie Andrews, B.E. Cowling, Ernest Goodrich and Morris Ennis. Mr. Pond was the son of John Hawkins Pond and Elizabeth Vick Davis Pond. He spent his entire life at the family home, "Oak View," which was built by his grandfather, Hawkins Pond, in 1845. He attended Mrs. Taylor's private school near Oakland, Surry County, the school at Wakefield, and Suffolk Military academy at Suffolk. He was manager of the Farmers' Alliance at Waverly until the property was destroyed by fire about 1896, when he resumed farming at "Oak View." He continued farming until his 70th year. He had been a director of The Bank of Sussex and Surry, Wakefield, since 1914. As a small boy, he joined the Rocky Hock Methodist Church. He served for 33 years as superintendent of the Sunday school. He was a member of the board of stewards and its chairman for a number of years. He served as treasurer of the church for 50 years and was recording steward of the Wakefield Circuit composted of the Wakefield, Ivor and Rocky Hock Churches. On November 23, 1898, he married Miss Sallie Q. Moyler, of Sussex County, who died in 1939. Three sisters preceded him in death; Mrs. G.A. Harris, Mrs. H.H. Carroll and Bessie Pond, who died in childhood. Mr. Pond is survived by four children, Mrs. George L. Munford, Walter M. Pond, Robert M. Pond and Miss Dorothy Pond of Wakefield; two brothers, Charles A. Pond of Powhatan Court House and John W. Pond of Surry County; one sister, Mrs. L.J. Bain of Capron; two grandchildren, Anne Moyler Munford and Robert M. Pond, Jr., and a number of nieces and nephews. ****************************************************************************** WALTER JACKSON AND SALLIE QUARLES MOYLER POND PEOPLE NAMED IN THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS OF ROCKY HOCK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Known by friends and neighbors as "Watty," Walter Jackson Pond lived and farmed at Oak View all but a few years of his life. He saw many changes in agriculture during his life - from horse to machines and something called hybrid corn. Watty Pond was a pillar in the church. He led the remodeling of Rocky Hock in 1929 at which time Sunday school rooms were added and heat and electric lights were installed. For 33 years, he was the School superintendent, and for 50 years, he was church treasurer. He was a member of the Board of Stewards of the Wakefield Circuit and also the Board of Director of the Bank of Sussex and Surry for many years. On November 23, 1898, Walter Jackson Pond married Sallie Quarles Moyler of Sussex County. They had four children that lived to adulthood; Lucile Moyler Pond Munford, Walter M. Pond, Robert M. Pond (Moyler Pond's father), and Miss Dorothy M. Pond. Both Walter and Sallie are buried in the Rocky Hock Cemetery. Thanks to Moyler and Brenda Pond for the photographs and information.
