PRESSON WAKEFIELD - Mrs. Amanda Wilson Presson, 72, of Route 1, died Thursday in Goodrich Nursing Home in Wakefield. She was born in Forest, Va., and was a member of Rocky Hock United Methodist Church in Surry County. She was employed by the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond in 1940. She was a former member of Wakefield Woman's Club, the Virginia Education Association and Kappa Delta Pi fraternity. She was former president of the Parents Teachers Association in Wakefield, a member of the Frances Bland Randolph Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and General William Mahone Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She also was a member of Rolfe Warren Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. In 1936 she graduated from Farmville State Teachers College, which is now Longwood College, and did graduate work in the field of Education at the College of William and Mary and at Virginia Commonwealth University. From 1932 to 1940 she taught at Brookville High School in Campbell County; in 1941 and 1942 she served as superintendent of the Department of Social Services in Augusta County, and from 1943 to 1948 in Surry County; from 1954 to 1955 she taught at Wakefield High School; from 1956 to 1960 she taught sixth graders at Wakefield Elementary; from 1961 to 1963 she taught at Surry County High School, from 1963 to 1965 at Surry County Academy, and from 1965 to 1978 at Prince George County elementary. She retired in 1978. Survivors include her husband, Arthur Lee Presson Sr.; a daughter, Miss Alice Elizabeth Presson of Charlottesville; and a sister, Mrs. Marie W. Laughon of Wirtz, Va. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Purviance Funeral Home in Wakefield, by the Rev. E. Lee Chattin. Burial will be in Rocky Hock United Methodist Church Cemetery in Surry County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The requests that expressions of sympathy take the for contributions to the Sussex or Surry Unit of the American Cancer Society or to Rocky Hock United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. ****************************************************************************** AMANDA WILSON PRESSON WAKEFIELD - Mrs. Amanda Wilson Presson, 72, of Rt. 1, Box 64, Wakefield, died Thursday, Oct. 16 in Goodrich Nursing Home, Wakefield, after a long illness. A native of Forest, she was the daughter of the late David Kyle and Lora Scott Wilson. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Lee Presson Sr.; a daughter, Alice Elizabeth Presson, Charlottesville; and a sister, Marie W. Laughon, Wirtz and a number of nieces and nephews. A teacher in Virginia schools for 32 years, Mrs. Presson was a 1936 graduate of Farmville State Teachers college (now Longwood College) and she attended the College of William and Mary, and Virginia Commonwealth University for postgraduate work in Education. She was a member of Rocky Hock United Methodist Church. From 1932 - 1940 she taught in Campbell County Public Schools at Brookville High School. In 1940 whe was employed at the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond. From 1941 - 1942 she served as superintendent of the Department of Social Services in Augusta County. In 1943 she accepted a position as superintendent of the Department of Social Services in Surry County and served in this capacity until 1948. She began to teach again at Wakefield High School, 1954-1955, and taught until her retirement in 1978 at the following; 1956-1960, Wakefield Elementary School, sixth grade; 1961 - 1963, Surry County High School; 1963 -1965, Surry County Academy; 1965-1978, Prince George County Elementary School. She was a member of the Virginia Education Association, was former president of the Wakefield Parent-Teacher Association, was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, honorary teaching fraternity, was a former member of the Wakefield Woman’s Club, was a member of the Frances Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the General William Mahone Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Rolfe-Warren Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 in the Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield by the Rev. E. Lee Chattin. Burial was in the Rocky Hock United Methodist Church Cemetery, Surry County.
