Wakefield Man Killed WAKEFIELD - Howard Henley Presson Jr., 37, of Wakefield, was instantly killed this morning about 7 o'clock when he was thrown from his tractor in a collision with a tractor-trailer about one and a half miles east of Wakefield as he was entering Route 460 from a field. According to information received from Sam Purviance of the Purviance Funeral Home in Wakefield, Presson was killed when the trailer fell on him as he lay on the shoulder of the road. The accident was investigated by State Trooper E.G. Russell. John Jessie Smith, 48, of Norfolk, the driver of the tractor-trailer was charged with involuntary manslaughter, according to Trooper Russell. Presson was the son of the late Howard H. Presson, Sr. and Mrs. Edna C. Presson. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Roach Presson, two brothers, Harris Presson, of Wakefield, and Allie B. Presson, of Waverly, and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at the Purviance Funeral Chapel in Wakefield. The Rev. L.P. Bland will officiate. Interment will take place at the Rocky Hock Church cemetery, at 2:30 p.m. Friday. ****************************************************************************** HOWARD H. PRESSON KILLED IN CRASH; SERVICES FRIDAY Howard Henley Presson, Jr., 36 was killed instantly in a traffic collision on Route 460 near Wakefield, Wednesday at 7:05 a.m. He was a native of Surry County, a member of Rocky Hock Methodist Church and of the Virginia Farm Bureau. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Peggy Roach Presson; his mother, Mrs. Edna C. Presson; two brothers, Harris Presson, Wakefield, and Allie Presson of Waverly and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 13, at 2:30 p.m. at Purviance Funeral Chapel with Rev. L.P. Bland, pastor of Wakefield Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rocky Hock Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Stanley Brantley, Stanley Murphy, Ray Layne, B.E. Cowling, Jr., Eurt Pittman, William Peebles, Randolph Murphy and Melvin Goodrich. ****************************************************************************** CRASH FATAL TO WAKEFIELDIAN A shamble of wrecked machinery and the loss of a life was the toll of this accident near Wakefield. A tragic accident on Route 460 about two miles east of Wakefield took the life of Howard Henley Presson, Jr., 36, of Wakefield Wednesday morning at 7:05. Presson was on his tractor pulling a peanut picker when he was struck from behind by a loaded tractor-trailer truck. Investigating State Trooper D.G. Russell said Presson was thrown from the tractor seat and died instantly. The impact flung the vehicles involved approximately 150 feet off the road. John Jessie Smith, 48, of South Norfolk, driver of the truck was not injured other than by a scratch on the head. He was charged with involuntary manslaughter and will be given a hearing in Sussex County Court this month. Presson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Peggy Roach Presson, of Wakefield. ****************************************************************************** WAKEFIELD FARMER KILLED IN CRASH A Wakefield farmer was killed yesterday morning when the tractor he was driving was struck from behind by a loaded tractor-trailer truck. State police said Howard H. Presson, 37, was pulling a peanut picker behind his tractor when the crash occurred on U.S. Rt. 460 one mile east of Wakefield at 7:05 a.m. Presson was thrown from the tractor seat and died immediately. The driver of the truck, John Jessie Smith, 48, of Norfolk, was not hurt. Presson, a member of Rocky Hock Methodist Church, survived by his wife, Mrs. Peggie Roach Presson; his mother, Mrs. Edna C. Presson of Wakefield, and two brothers, Allie B. Presson of Waverly and Harris Presson of Wakefield. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Puviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, with burial in Rocky Hock Church cemetery.
