PRESSON WAKEFIELD MAN DROWNS IN LAKE Joel Presson*, of Surry Meets Death in Waters of Shields. WAS V.P.I. STUDENT Physician Work Futilely Over Body of Young Man Joel Presson, 22, of Wakefield in Surry County, was drowned yesterday morning about 8:30 o’clock in Shields' Lake, following, it is believed, a stroke of apoplexy, heart disease, or cramps. Five physicians worked over the young man's body, which was recovered in about thirty minutes by Shippard Parsons, 3307 Kensington, who, with other member of the Dolphin club, an aquatics organization, were in the lake at the time of the accident. Dr. F.K. Lord, who watched Presson enter the lake, said that he let himself into the water feet first until it reached his chest, and then suddenly fell over and disappeared beneath the surface. Presson had started to return to his home in Wakefield, following a visit to the home of R.D. Linthicum, 2901 Edgewood Avenue, and motoring by the lake, he and Miss Pauline Hines, of Washington, and H.K. Bache, 2910 Hawthorne Avenue, decided to take a dip before starting the trip. Presson had driven up to Richmond to bring Mrs. Linthicum home, following her visit in Wakefield. He was a second-year man at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and was described to several who knew him as of unusually strong mentality. Coroner James M. Whitefield rendered a verdict of accidental drowning in the case, and the body was burned over to Bennett’s undertaking establishment. Funeral services will be conducted in Wakefield, young Presson's father having arrived in Richmond yesterday afternoon to return with the body today. *"Presser" in several instances corrected to Presson.
