JOSEPH CORBIN PARKER Dr. Joseph Corbin Parker died on May 24, 2004. He was born in Dendron, Virginia on August 27, 1914 to Marion Fisher Wells Parker and Dr. Joseph Henry Parker. He graduated from Christchurch School in 1931, earned a B.S. degree at the Virginia Military Institute in 1935, and received his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1949, after which he served a rotation internship in the MCV Hospitals followed by a residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Before his first year of residency training was over, he joined the Medical Corps of the Army Air Force as a first lieutenant M.C. AUS and served for four years during World War II. His overseas duty was on Saipan with the 20th Air Force B-29 Bomber Wing. He was discharged in 1945 as a major M.C. AUS and resumed his medical residency training. Over the years, he taught thousands of medical and nursing students, interns, and residents at the Medical College of Virginia and Stuart Circle Hospital while helping thousands of women and delivering thousands of babies in his medical practice in Richmond. He was a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the AMA, SMA, SOGSoc, and several other professional and social organizations - serving for a time on the board of the Country Club of Virginia. He was predeceased by his first wife, Alice Cabell Horsley Parker; his second wife, Frances Dudley Brooks Parker; and his grandson, Aaron Parker Lockwood. He is survived by three sons, Dr. Joseph Corbin Parker, Jr., of Louisville, Kentucky, Richard Heath Parker of Corona, California and Dr. Henry Randolph Parker of Edmond, Alberta, Canada; and two daughters, Melinda Caperton Parker Skinner of Richmond and Dr. kate Horsley Parker of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Survivors also include eight grandchildren, Christopher Wells Parker and Lisa Parker Gorfain of California, Dr. John Randolph Parker of Tennessee, Emily Scott Skinner and Eliza MacKay Skinner of New York City, Nancy Parker Cooper of Florida, Zakarayah Pasdar Parker and Cenobar Pasdar Parker of Alberta, Canada; and two great- grandchildren, Taylor Corbin Parker and Britton Reese Gorfain. As stated by his oldest son and namesake upon his father’s retirement, "Your role in the cosmos has been full and productive. Life has been positively influenced by your presence. We thank you for all you have done for us (your children), the legacy of your life." In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Alice Cabell Horsley Parker Scholarship Fund at the VCU School of Arts, P.O. Box 2519, Richmond, Va. 23284 or to the V.M.I. Foundation. Plans for a memorial service will be announced.
