Andrew Pollard Rives was the seventh of thirteen children of Reverend George Rives and his wife, Ann Pollard. His father, George, was a Methodist pastor who served several pastorates in the Virginia Conference. In 1883 Andrew married Florence Edwards "of the ancient and honorable family of that name in Surry County, Virginia, since the early 17th century." Andrew and Florence lived on the farm known as Oakland, and Andrew farmed all his life. One of their wedding presents was a cut crystal bowl on a silver stand reported to be filled with jelly. This bowl has been used as a family christening blow since that time. Andrew and Florence had three children, all born at Oakland; Sterling Edwards Rives, Sr., who married Ruth Bailey, daughter of Robert and Annie Laurie Bailey; Mabel Pollard Rives, who married Frank James Pond; and Ruth Albina Rives, who married John Daniel Pond. Both Andrew and Florence were buried at Oakland. No pictures of them can be located. Thanks to Fay Savedge, Gayle Boykin Lanier and Sterling E. Rives, III (Andrew's great grandson) for this information and picture of Oakland.
