EDWARDS ROGERS PROMINENT SURRY WOMAN DIES AT RICHMOND HOTEL DENDRON, VA. - Sept. 17 - Mrs. Mabel C. Rogers, wife of J. Ernest Rogers, of the Surry Lumber Company, was found dead in her room at Murphy's Hotel, Richmond, on Saturday. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Edwards, and in addition to her husband is survived by two sisters, Mrs. L.L. Valliance, Smithfield, and Mrs. A.R. Morris, Dendron. The late W.A. Edwards, clerk of the Circuit Court, Isle of Wight County, was her brother. She was a member of the Dendron Methodist Church for a long number of years and an active member of the Sunday school and teacher of the Young Ladies Bible Class, active in the missionary society and other organizations of the church. She was interested in and active in the local organization of the United Daughter of the Confederacy, and one of the most widely known citizens of Surry County. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at Dendron. ****************************************************************************** FUNERAL OF MRS. ROGERS HELD FROM DENDRON CHURCH The funeral of Mrs. J.E. Rogers, aged 57, who died in her room at a hotel in Richmond of heart failure early Saturday, was conducted at Dendron Methodist Church Sunday afternoon by the pastor, Rev. A.W. Linthicum, assisted by Rev. J.H. Cosby, pastor of Dendron Baptist Church. The attendance was larger than at any funeral held in Dendron in years. In addition to her husband, Ernest Rogers, official of the Surry Lumber Company, the deceased is survived by two sisters, Mrs. L.L. Vellines of Smithfield and Mrs. A.R. Morris, of Dendron, a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends throughout Surry County, Richmond and Norfolk. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Edwards and a sister of the late W.A. Edwards, sheriff of Isle of Wight County. Interment was at Petersburg. Mabel Claire (EDWARDS; Mrs. J. Dendron. A photo of her monument is included, which states b. near Smithfield. Birthplace &c. from D.Cert. #20838, which gives dt/o James Edwards & unknown. James T. Edwards m. Penina Stringfield, dt/o Edwin, 7 Mar 1853, in Isle of Wight Co. (FamilySearch.org "Virginia Marriages") The family appear in the 1900 Census in Hardy Dist. (#30), Isle of Wight Co. Her bro Willie A., then Deputy County Clerk, lived next door.
