ROGERS SUCCUMBS AT CARSLEY HOME Prominent Surry County Merchant and Farmer Dies at Age of 85 WAS DIRECTOR OF LOCAL BANK Funeral Services Held Friday with Burial in Plot near Dendron CARSLEY - Funeral services for John Walter Rogers, prominent merchant and farmer, who died at his home here last Thursday were held Friday afternoon. Mr. Rogers, a life-long resident of Surry County, was 85 years old. He was active in the religious, business, civic and fraternal life of Surry County and Waverly. He was the oldest member of the Waverly Masonic Lodge and was director of the Bank of Waverly, Inc. IN FAILING HEALTH He had been in failing health for some time and had been ill for several days. Death occurred at 12:30 a.m. Thursday. The funeral services were held with the Rev. Mr. Robinson, pastor of the Carsley Methodist Church, of which Mr. Rogers was a life-ling member, officiating. Burial was made in the family plot near Dendron. Mr. Rogers was the son of William T. Rogers and Mary Julia Goodrich. In 1877 he was married to Martha Leonora Cofer. She preceded him in death by three years. SIX CHILDREN SURVIVE He is survived by six children, former Senator William Oliver Rogers, of Waverly; Dr. Richard Ovid Rogers, of Bluefield, W.Va.; J. Herbert Rogers, of Carsley; Mrs. O.P. Higgins, of Waverly; Mrs. John S. Gale, of Carsley, and Mrs. F.T. Joyner of Ivor; also half-brothers and sisters, Joshua Rogers, of Wakefield; George and Ralph Rogers, of Newport News; Mrs. Lloyd Price, of Newport News, and Mrs. Sidney Johnson, of Dendron. Also 19 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers included: Richard Gale, James Cofer Gale, John Rogers, O.P. Higgins, Jr., Horace Higgins, William Higgins, A. Paul Hartz and Edwin T. Coulbourn.
