John William Spencer, 77, of Elberon, Va., died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001. He was born in Hampton, Va., on Jan. 16, 1924, to the late John W. Spencer Sr. and Minnie B. Hogge Spencer. Rev. Spencer was a 1963 graduate of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, had served on the Board of Ministers at Campbell University, and had served as pastor of the Community Center in Halifax, N.C., Atlantic Baptist in Atlantic, N.C., Moore's Swamp Baptist Church In Elberon, Va., Staunton River Baptist Church in Brookneal, Va., Forest Hill Baptist Church in Skippers, Va., Seaboard Baptist Church in Seaboard, N.C., South Rosemary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, N.C, and was currently the pastor of Maranatha Baptist Church in Windsor, Va. Rev. Spencer is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Grubbs Spencer; two sons, J. David Spencer and his wife, Caroline, and James W. Spencer, all of Hampton, Va.; two daughters, Dorothy Spencer Murray and her husband, Daniel, and Linda Spencer Tuck and her husband, Michael, all of Windsor, Va.; two stepsons, B.A. Seward III of Culpeper, Va., and Anthony Seward and his wife, Lisa, of Surry, Va.; stepdaughters, Suzanne S. Rogers and husband, Kenny, Robin S. Gynn and husband, Harold, all of Surry, Martha S. Newsome and husband, Clarence, and Elizabeth S. Leonard of Windsor; brother, James M. Spencer and his wife, Christine, of Hampton; mother-in- law, Dorothy White Grubbs of Elberon, Va.; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Maranatha Baptist Church on Deer Path Trail, Windsor, with the Rev. Jarvis Hearn officiating. Burial will be in Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, and at other times at the home of Linda and Michael Tuck, 6 Roberts Ave., Windsor, Va. Memorial donations may be made to the Maranatha Baptist Church Building Fund, 23350 Deer Path Trail, Windsor, VA 23487, or to the Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice, 98 Kilby Shores Drive, #100, Suffolk, VA 23434.
