GARLAND W. SPRATLEY DIES; ACTIVE IN CHURCH, COMMUNITY Mrs. Jennie Barrett Spratley of Dendron died Wednesday, August 12, 1987. She was born and lived all her life in Dendron. She was the widow of Garland W. Spratley and the daughter of the late Waverly S. and May Higgins Barrett. Mrs. Spratley was active in church and community affairs. She was the first woman to be elected to the Dendron Town Council and served that body for twelve years. She also served as chairman of the Surry County Tuberculosis Association for over fifty years. She was chairman of the Surry County American Red Cross. She served as president of the Stonewall Jackson School P.T.A., the Community Club, the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, the local and county Home Makers Club. Mrs. Spratley was president of the Southside Lung Association. She served as chairman of the Surry County Woman’s Auxiliary of Patrick Henry Hospital. The Surry County President’s Ball honoring President Franklin D. Roosevelt was chaired by Mrs. Spratley for several years. She was a member of the Surry County Garden Club. Mrs. Spratley was a Past Worthy Matron of Laurel Chapter 114 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her church activities include membership in the Dendron United Church of Christ (Congregational Christian) where she served as secretary of the church and teacher of the 1910 Bible Class since 1948. She was a life member of the Woman’s Missionary Society of the Southern Conference. She was president of the Eastern Virginia Woman’s Conference and served as chairman of the Woman’s Summer School at Elon College. She served as president of the local Church Woman United and on the state level as recording secretary. She held life membership in the Historical Society of the United Church of Christ and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities in which she held several offices. Mrs. Spratley had been retired for many years after serving the United States Postal Service for over twenty years at the Dendron Post Office. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jennie S. Nicholson of Wakefield and Mrs. Lois S. Donald of Williamsburg; three sisters, Mrs. W.W. Harward of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Harry W. Spratley and Col. C. Elizabeth Barrett (U.S. Army Nursing Corps., Ret.) both of Dendron; four grandchildren, John B. Nicholson III of Wakefield, William S. Nicholson of Richmond, Douglas A. Donald, Jr. of Wilmington, N.C. and Diane D. Ward of New Bern, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, August 14 at the Purviance Funeral Home in Wakefield. Burial was in the Wakefield Cemetery. Memorial donation may be made as contributions to the Barrett-Harward Scholarship Fund at Elon College, Elon, N.C. 27244 or to the Surry Volunteer Rescue Squad.
