Howard was born on January 17, 1920, in Dendron, Va., the youngest son of the late Leon Clayton and Lizzie Pittman Scott. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edith McGhee Scott; their five children, Susan Carter (Rusty) of Wilmington, N.C., Deborah Kennedy (Tom) of Charlotte, N.C., Clif (Robin) of Richmond, Lisa Scott Drummond of Henrico, Mark (Sonya) of Charlotte, N.C.; as well as nine grandchildren. He was a lifelong resident of Richmond, having grown up on the Byrd Park area. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, where he was captain of the basketball team. Over the years, he continued to enjoy athletic pursuits, primarily at the Westwood Racquet Club, where he was an avid racquetball player. During World War II he served in the 4th Infantry Division, where he attained the rank of Captain. After the war, he opened the Blue Scottie Exxon, located on the corner of Libbie and Patterson Avenue, which became a landmark in the Westhampton area. Over the years, "Scottie" diversified into the real estate market and opened Westhampton Realty Co., presently owned and operated by his son, Clif. One of his greatest pleasures was to be at his property on Diascund Creek, where he could be found "manicuring" his yard. He always had a project centered around his garage, where he accumulated everything he needed to fix anything. He encouraged his children and their friends to fish, ski and enjoy water activities of all types. In this beautiful and remote setting, he was happiest. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at River Road Church, Baptist, at 3 p.m., and visitation will be held at the church parlor on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tuckahoe Rescue Squad or to a charity of your choice.
