AUGUSTUS (GUS) SOWDER 

  ELBERON - Augustus Thrash (Gus) Sowder, 68, former treasurer of Surry 
County, died Jan. 9 morning in his home.

  He was the husband of Mrs. Marion Cockes Sowder.

  He was a native of Floyd County and a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic 
Institute.  He was agriculture instructor in Surry County from 1933 to 
1950.  He was treasurer of the county from 1950 to 1974, when he retired.

  He was a member and superintendent of the Sunday school of New Lebanon 
Christian Church, Elberon, past president of Surry Ruritan Club, member 
of the Commonwealth Club of Richmond, and had been a director of the Bank 
of Surry County since 1950.

  Other survivors include two sons, Gene J. Sowder of Greensboro, N.C, 
and Wallace A. Sowder of Virginia Beach; a sister, Mrs. Blanche S. Boxley 
of Roanoke; and a brother, Eugene R. Sowder of Roanoke; and three 
grandchildren.

  A funeral was held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Oakwood Cemetery, Surry, by 
the Rev. James A. Cales.  Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, was in charge. 
Memorial donations may be made to Surry County Rescue Squad.

His step-mother, Iva (CANNADY SOWDER; Mrs. Delma Green) FEAZALL, 
   is buried in Jacksonville Cemetery, Floyd.  (Find a Grave Mem. #148945471)
