COCKES SOWDER ELBERON - Marion Cockes Sowder, age 98, of Elberon, Va., passed away Dec. 7, 2012, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Ottomus [sic; Ottimus*] and Bessie Price Cockes and was also preceded in death by her husband, Augustus Thrash Sowder and her brother, Nelson Cockes. She retired after 40 years as postmaster of Elberon Post Office and was a member of New Lebanon Christian Church, Union Hunt Club, Surry Hunt Club and Neighborhood Hunt Club. Mrs. Sowder is survived by her sons, Gene Sowder, and Wallace Sowder and his wife Barbara; grandchildren, Scott Sowder and wife Amy, William Sowder and wife Anita, and Jennifer Wathen; and great-grandchildren, John, William, Ericka, and Ruby Sowder. The family will receive friends at the Wakefield Chapel of R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home, 11414 General Mahone Hwy, Wakefield, Va., on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, from 2 to 4 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Surry. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Lebanon Christian Church, P. O. Box 45, Elberon, VA 23846.
